The Real Group: Elements

You are currently viewing The Real Group: Elements

_______________________________________________________________

There it is – at last: after quite a few years, the Real Group presents their new Album „Elements“ with 16 songs, predominantely sung in English. The group – that has been founded in 1984 by five music students – proves with this new release that even after more than 30 years, it still holds a unique position in the international a cappella scene.

Fans of Emma Nilsdotter will immediately be rewarded: her distinctive voice forms the centre of the catchy opening piece “Since You’ve Gone”, directly creating that particular Real Group sound. Followed by “Tumša nakte, zaļa zāle” -a spherical Latvian folk song, in which we can sense the influence of Latvian real-group basso Janis Strazdins.

The ballad  “Unintentional” reveals the beautiful voice of alto Lisa Östergren, who replaced Katarina Henryson in 2016. Positioned quite differently soundwise as her predecessor, her velvety soft timbre blends in well with the overall sound and complements it with its own touch – and with this characteristic song. “Water” on the other hand, opens up a new dimension in the textual content by calling attention to the worldwide water crisis. With this wonderful creation by Anders Edenroth, the Real Group supports the global disaster relief – and development organization : “Oxfam”: not only a highlight musically.

“I’ll help you home” also comes up with its own individual style: mostly arranged for two solo-voices and a flawless bass line – a great piece written by Morten Vinther. “Nature Boy” finally feeds the fans with a version of the live hit: A sublime cover of the jazz standard by Eden Ahbez. The song “Leaves” presents an up to now rather unusual and very modern a-cappella sound, and the title track “Elements“ is featured by some of the former Real Group members. At the very end, the listener is awaited by three small highlights: the funny as well as terrific musical interlude: “Catch Up,  Ketchup !”, a Swedish-Finnish cooperation with Rajaton and, as a rather festive ending, “jingle bells” – a magnificent arrangement full of syncopated rhythms and a shining Emma Nielsdotter.

On the entire CD, the Real Group presents a modern and clear sound at the highest level. Although jazz songs are only heard sporadically than on previous ones, the group convinces with consistently intelligent pop music on this album . The recording producers Anders Edenroth, Morten Vinther and Linnéa Carell Brunnberg have also done an excellent job; The Real Group is and will remain the signpost of the modern European a-cappella scene with this new studio album.

As pointed out in the booklet ,“Elements“ symbolizes the current situation the Real Group finds itself in: the combination of very different elements with individual qualities that need each other to create this magnificent music.
